Our Students Cooperative for the Future

Abstract

Higher education institutions (HEIs) have historically led discussions on sustainable business practices for SMEs, yet many SMEs, even those near universities, lack awareness of university programs that could support them. This article addresses this issue by exploring how ICT student cooperatives within the SUSIE (Sustainable Employability through Innovative Pedagogy) project can enhance collaboration between universities and SMEs. The study, involving JUWEKAM and HAMUG SMEs in partnership with Moshi Cooperative University (MoCU), examined the impact of student cooperatives on SME market innovation. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, surveys, and reflective analysis to evaluate the influence of these cooperatives on SMEs. Findings reveal the creation of the Kill-Business Hub at MoCU, which facilitates collaboration and promotes SME marketing innovation through student-driven initiatives. The practical learning approach, including collaborative learning and hands-on activities, improved SMEs' online marketing strategies. However, SMEs lacked knowledge in online marketing, product packaging, and advertising channels, which were addressed through the ICT student cooperative. Effective communication and structured student projects can further enhance university-SME collaborations.
