Abstract:
This paper examines the challenges which the OAU and the AU have faced in realizing the
objectives for the organization. It is divided into two main parts. Part one (Section 2) examines
the origin OAU and its objectives. It discusses the process which the organisation went
through in realizing its objectives and the challenges experienced. Part two (Sections 3 and 4)
of the paper discusses the factors which led into the transition from OAU to AU. It examines
the objectives of the African Union and the programmes that the AU has put in place to enable
it fulfil its objectives. The paper concludes by examining the challenges which the AU is
facing in realizing its objectives and makes recommendations on sustainable strategies that
the organisation can develop to enable it to meet its objectives in the future.
