Abstract:
The overall purpose of this study was to assess the transport demands and its impact on road
safety a case of Motorcycle in Moshi Municipality. Specifically, the study aimed at determining
the pre-disposing variables of motorcycle accidents in Moshi Municipality; examining the
current traffic laws put in place by the Tanzanian government to prevent Motorcycle accidents
as well as examining the extent of motorcycle operations comply with the existing laws and
regulations. The study had a sample size of 83 respondents where survey questionnaire and
interview were used as data collection methods. Data were analysed by using descriptive
statistics, multiple response and Likert scale. The study found that, poor infrastructure,
negligence of drivers, respectively, overloading of vehicles, inadequacy of relevant laws, lack
of road safety education and lack of road traffic signs were among predisposing variables of
motorcycle accidents. Moreover, insurance and tax, carrying a single passenger, personal
protective equipment, speed limits on roads, and license were mentioned as current traffic law
to prevent motorcycle accidents. Also, it was found that, road rage and aggressive driving,
ignoring wearing personal protective equipment, driving without license and carrying more than
one passenger determined motorcycle operations compliance with the existing laws and
regulations. The study concluded that, many road accidents are sometimes caused by vehicle
overloading since overloaded vehicle tends to lose balance and stability leading to accident
incidents. Adhering to the law of carrying one passenger may create a safety situation which
puts passengers and other road users at safety situation from the accident. It is recommended
that; it is important to make a formal commitment to promote effective road safety education so
that appropriate behaviour is fostered from an early age.
